PRINCE GEORGE — 3 year old Prince George boy Mavrik Turnbull, who was courageously fighting cancer since the age of 2, has passed away.

In a Facebook post, the family of Mavrik says that he took his last breath Monday night at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, with his parents Derek and Vanessa by his side.

Several NHL players took time to visit or send messages to lift Mavrik’s spirits. Among those who reached out were rising stars Connor Bedard, Fraser Minten, and Macklin Celebrini. Jansen Harkins, a former Prince George Cougar, also stopped by to visit. Joshua Ravensbergen, also connected to the Cougars, was another familiar face who came to support the young boy. Adding to the excitement, Fin—the Vancouver Canucks’ mascot—also stopped by.

In addition to in-person visits, Mavrik received heartfelt messages from the team behind Hockey Night in Canada, bringing encouragement from one of the country’s most iconic broadcasts with Elliotte Friedman, Kevin Bieksa, Ron MacLean and Jennifer Botterill sharing their support, sending love and positivity directly to Mavrik and his family.

In an earlier interview with CKPG News, Mavrik’s father, Derek, said the outpouring of support demonstrated the remarkable reach of Mavrik’s story and the impact he had on people across Canada and beyond.

Following news of his passing, the Prince George Cougars shared an emotional tribute on social media.

“With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of our friend and teammate, Mavrik Turnbull. Whether he was on the ice with the team during practice, hanging out on the bench with the players in warm-up, or playing mini-sticks with the guys, Mav was a beloved part of the Cougars family. His positive spirit, infectious smile, and love for the game of hockey were an inspiration to us all. He touched the lives of so many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

In the wake of Mavrik’s passing, community support continues through an online GoFundMe campaign. Funds raised will help cover funeral expenses, celebration of life costs and temporary accommodation needs as the family remains away from home. The family is also dealing with transportation challenges after their vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run collision and is currently being repaired. Mavrik’s family have begun planning a celebration of life, scheduled for Prince George. No date for a celebration of life has been set yet.

With any remaining funds, the family is planning to use it to build “Mavrik’s legacy foundation which will be used to help other oncology families, medical needs for children in Prince George, as well as supporting a hockey player for the year to be able to play.”

Community members are encouraged to share personal memories, favourite moments, funny stories or photographs that capture Mavrik’s spirit and the impact he had on those around him.
