Prince George choked by season’s worst smoke as wildfire haze blanketed the city
PRINE GEORGE — Prince George residents endured some of the smokiest conditions of the wildfire season over the weekend as thick smoke from fires burning in the Cariboo and Chilcotin regions drifted into the city, prompting an air quality warning and raising concerns about health impacts.
According to Gail Roth, a senior air quality meteorologist with the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Parks, Sunday brought the highest hourly fine particulate readings seen in Prince George this year.
“It was perhaps the smokiest we’ve experienced this year,” Roth said. “The peak we reached for the fine particulate was 94, which is quite high.”
The concentration of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, peaked during the late morning and afternoon hours. Residents began noticing deteriorating conditions around 9 a.m., with the smoke lingering through much of the day. The pollution levels were significant enough to trigger an air quality warning for Prince George.
