WestJet flight attendants’ union serves 72-hour strike notice

At the centre of the dispute are wages, working conditions and compensation for work performed before and after flights. The union argues flight attendants are not properly compensated for certain duties performed on the ground, while WestJet maintains employees are paid for all required work through its existing “credit hour” compensation system.

For travellers in Prince George, the situation remains somewhat complicated.

WestJet operates daily flights between Prince George and its major hubs in Calgary and Vancouver through WestJet Encore, whose flight attendants are not involved in the current labour dispute. However, passengers travelling beyond those destinations on mainline WestJet flights could still experience disruptions if a strike or lockout occurs.

Any large-scale interruption to WestJet’s broader network could create delays, flight cancellations and missed connections through Calgary and Vancouver, two key gateways for northern B.C. travellers. WestJet has acknowledged it is preparing contingency plans should a work stoppage occur.

While a strike is not guaranteed, the uncertainty has already prompted WestJet to offer greater flexibility for customers. The airline is allowing passengers with flights booked between July 30 and August 4 to make a one-time change to their itinerary or cancel their trip without penalty.

Travellers with flights scheduled over the coming days are encouraged to monitor their reservation status, watch for communications from WestJet and check the airline’s website regularly for updates as negotiations continue.
