Provincial funding expands access to workforce training through UNBC

PRINCE GEORGE — Residents across northern British Columbia will have greater access to affordable, career-focused training thanks to new provincial funding that will allow the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) to offer 12 Continuing Studies programs through the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant.

The funding initiative supports training programs aligned with workforce priorities in key sectors including health care, environmental stewardship, technology, business and mental health. The grant is designed to help eligible British Columbians overcome financial barriers to education while providing employers and communities with the skilled workers needed to meet future labour demands.

UNBC’s Continuing Studies department will deliver the programs using flexible learning formats aimed at working professionals, job seekers and individuals looking to transition into new careers. The programs were developed through consultation with employers, Indigenous communities, government and industry partners to ensure training reflects current and emerging workforce needs.

“UNBC was founded to serve the North, and that commitment extends well beyond the University’s degree programs,” said Dr. Michel S. Beaulieu, UNBC’s Provost and Vice-President Academic. “With the support of the Future Skills Grant, UNBC is creating opportunities for people to gain new skills, adapt to changing industries and contribute to the long-term success of their communities.”

The training opportunities address a range of workforce challenges, from strengthening cybersecurity capabilities and health-care systems to supporting sustainable resource development and Indigenous knowledge. University officials say the initiative highlights UNBC’s role in preparing learners for evolving industry demands while helping northern communities remain competitive and resilient.

“Workforce development begins by listening,” said Nicole Neufeld, Manager of Continuing Studies at UNBC. “When someone in the North wants to launch a new career, advance in their current role, or respond to changes in their industry, access to education shouldn’t be the barrier that holds them back. The Future Skills Grant allows UNBC to provide practical, industry-informed education that responds to the workforce needs of our region.”

Seven of the grant-supported courses are being offered for the first time through UNBC:

  • Certified Cybersecurity Technician
  • Certified Ethical Hacker
  • Certified Network Defender
  • Certified SOC Analyst
  • Clinical Informatics Foundations & Systems Integration
  • Clinical Informatics Leadership, Validation & Innovation
  • Strategic Supply Chain Leadership & Analytics

Five additional programs that have been offered previously are also included in the initiative:

  • Environmental Monitoring Certificate
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate
  • Project Management Core Certificate
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
  • Traditional Ecological Knowledge Certificate

The StrongerBC Future Skills Grant is part of the provincial government’s effort to make short-term skills training more accessible and help British Columbians prepare for opportunities in a rapidly changing job market. Through the funding, learners can gain industry-relevant credentials while remaining connected to their communities and workplaces.
