France beats Canada in doubles at Davis Cup; Canada still leads best-of-five tie 2-1

Auger-Aliassime, from Montreal, saw his 13-match winning streak at the Davis Cup come to a close with the loss. The 26-year-old had won four consecutive doubles matches at the competition.

Chan, from Markham, Ont., was playing in his first-ever Davis Cup match for Canada.

Both teams held serve rather comfortably through each of their opening six service games, with the French fending off the lone break and set point chance in the twelfth game to force a tiebreaker.

Bonzi and Herbert’s doubles experience proved pivotal in the deciding game, as they raced out to a 6-0 lead.

Although the Canadian duo cut the deficit to 6-4, Chan’s forehand attempt down the line found the net to seal the opening set for France.

The score remained tight through the first seven games of the second set, before France’s decisive break in the eighth game helped propel them to victory.

Canada raced out to a 2-0 lead in the tie on Friday thanks to singles wins by Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., over Arthur Rinderknech 6-2, 7-5 and Auger-Aliassime’s 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3 triumph over Quentin Halys.

The 2022 Davis Cup champions will look to wrap up the tie in singles play, with Auger-Aliassime expected to face Rinderknech in the fourth rubber match of the tie later Saturday. If necessary, Draxl would face Halys in the fifth and deciding match.

The winning team advances to the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, Italy in November.
