Cougars seek reset after road struggles

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Cougars are hoping a return to home ice can provide the spark needed to get their season moving in the right direction.

After a difficult road trip that ended with a lopsided loss on Sunday, the Cougars enter Friday night’s matchup determined to clean up the details that have prevented them from earning the results they expected through the opening weeks of the season.

For Head Coach Mark Lamb, the path forward starts with addressing several key areas throughout the lineup.

“We’ve got a lot of moving parts right now, but we’ve got to be better in a lot of parts of our game,” Lamb said.

The veteran bench boss pointed specifically to improvements that need to be made from the net outward.

“First our goaltending has to be better. Then it goes to the D, and we got to make better plays. We got to defend better in front of them. And then when we do have to have the puck, we got to make better puck plays. Our first pass is has got to be on the tape and then and then the support with the forwards have to come in after that.”

While the results haven’t been there yet, Lamb believes the solution isn’t complicated. He says getting out of a slump requires a commitment to preparation, discipline and hard work from every player in the lineup.

“Well, the message is always the same. It’s the preparation. To get out of a slump it’s going to take a lot of hard work, and it’s going to take all 20 guys that are playing in that game that night.”

Lamb also pointed to discipline as an area that hurt his club during the road trip. He noted that penalties and lapses in execution made life more difficult for the group, emphasizing that discipline extends far beyond simply staying out of the penalty box.

The Cougars have spent the week practicing and working on those areas as they prepare for another significant test.

Forward Kaden Lemire believes the mood around the team remains positive despite the recent setbacks. The returning veteran says the club is beginning to come together as players settle back into the lineup.

“I think just getting everyone into the mix and start getting used to everyone. You know we had a couple of hard practices so I think we’re positive going into this weekend. I think our guys are ready. We’re focused and we worked hard this week. Staying positive is is kind of been our thing.”

Lemire recently returned from Minnesota Wild training camp and says one of the biggest lessons he brought back was the importance of preparation away from game nights.

“You come into the rink every day and you got to be focused. You got to be dialed and you have to know what the coaches want from you. I think just being prepared is a big word that they use at that next level is just always be prepared.”

That preparation includes everything from practices and workouts to nutrition and sleep, areas Lemire says can make a significant difference over the course of a long season.

The Cougars will face a tough challenge Friday against a talented opponent, but the focus inside the dressing room remains on their own game. Lamb says success won’t come from finding a quick fix. Instead, it will come from playing a disciplined, structured game and putting together a complete effort from start to finish.

After a frustrating road trip, the Cougars now have an opportunity to respond in front of their home fans. Whether they can translate a week of hard work into two points remains to be seen, but the message throughout the room is clear: preparation, discipline and execution will determine the outcome.
