Campus rally supports sexual assault survivors
PRINCE GEORGE – A peaceful rally at the University of Northern British Columbia this week brought together students, community members and advocates in support of survivors of sexual violence, while also drawing attention to the ongoing discussion surrounding the high-profile Cornell 7 gang rape trial in the United States.
Organized by the Northern Women’s Centre at UNBC, the event titled “I Am Jane Doe,” began at the Tseba Firepit with discussions about personal experiences, institutional violence and survivor support before participants embarked on a peaceful march across campus. As the procession moved through UNBC, many people stopped to watch and observe respectfully.
The rally was inspired in part by the Cornell 7 case in the United States, which involved allegations that a woman, known publicly as Jane Doe, was sexually assaulted by several members of Cornell University’s Chi Phi fraternity. The high-profile case has sparked debate about victim blaming, privilege and power, with organizers saying the public reaction highlights many of the barriers survivors face when they choose to come forward.
