Bond Critical Of NDP Policy Shift On LNG

VICTORIA – British Columbia is offering new conditions and rebates for liquefied natural gas projects in the province.  Under the new fiscal agreement, LNG projects will see relief from provincial sales taxes, subject to repayment in the form of an equivalent operational payment. They will be subject to new greenhouse gas emission standards and general industrial electricity rates consistent with other industrial users in B.C.

Premier John Horgan says the province will review LNG projects using four conditions.  He says all LNG projects should guarantee a fair return for B.C.’s natural resources, guarantee jobs and training opportunities for British Columbians, respect and partner with First Nations, and meet the province’s climate commitments.

The announcement has left Prince George – Valemount Liberal MLA Shirley Bond scratching her head.  While in opposition, Bond says Premier Horgan criticized the Liberals for providing incentives to lure the LNG industry to the province.  “Every day we see some sort of policy revision by the NDP government.  This is an astounding shift in policy,” said Bond.  She added “this government has been critical, skeptical, and written letters of opposition to the liquified natural gas project,” said Bond.

Bond is also curious about the position of Green Party leader Andrew Weaver.  “These are critical policy issues for him,” said Bond.  “He campaigned across British Columbia with a set of principles and every day seems prepared to compromise them, including this one today.”
