Salmon Stewards Of Tomorrow Release 2,000 Chinook Fry

PRINCE GEORGE – With the help of hundreds of kids, 2,000 Chinook Fry were released into the Nechako River this weekend. The Spruce City Wildlife Association raised the fish to help with the salmon population.

Off the truck and into the river, the small fish have quite the journey ahead of them. If the Chinook Fry make it through the Fraser River their ultimate destination will be the Pacific Ocean.

The local salmon stock is currently listed as a stock of concern, which means they can’t fully rebuild themselves without help. The many kids at the send-off were more than ready to lend a hand.

“So we want these guys to get involved as early as possible so that they learn at a young age that these are a very important species, and by building that connection we can kind of build the salmon stewards of tomorrow,” says Dustin Snyder, Spruce City Wildlife Association.
