PRINCE GEORGE – The Canadian Institutes for Health Research has released data collected on seniors between 2010 and 2015 to help policymakers address one of the most significant demographics in Canada. But the pool from which the information was drawn has one local advocacy group concerned.

“So the people surveyed for the initial part of this report are predominantly white, born in Canada, Christian and mostly Catholic,  well-educated, urban dwellers or live within 25 to 50 kilometres of a major urban centre, have an annual income of $50,000  or more,” says Lola-Dawn Fennell with the Prince George Council of Seniors. “That doesn’t sound like Prince George to me.”

She questions were the rural representation is, as well as the immigrant and First Nations populations.

She says her organization often deals with seniors who live on fixed incomes. In fact, according to the most recent census numbers, 13.1% of seniors in Prince George living in poverty.
