Sinkhole Bigger Issue Than Thought

PRINCE GEORGE – If it seems like there’s nothing happening at the site of a massive sinkhole at Winnipeg and Carney Street, you’re not wrong. Crews have moved the attention across Carney street to a small water channel next to the Spruce City Stadium in Carrie Jane Gray Park. That’s where the storm water from the Winnipeg Street site ultimately drains into. The City needs to build a dam at that channel before work on the sinkhole can begin.

“You have to be able to get the water out [of the sinkhole site] and by creating a dam so it doesn’t come back at you,” explains Dave Dyer, the General Manager of Engineering and Public Works.

Crews haven’t even been able to identify what the problem is and won’t until the water is drained from the sinkhole.  Dyer concedes the bill for this fix is climbing, but until it’s all finished, the final tally will be a mystery.

“We’re going to be in the hundreds of thousands right now. But we don’t know beyond that because we don’t know the extent of the repair.”
