Penalties the difference in Cougars loss to Portland

The Cougars suffered their sixth straight loss last night to the Portland Winterhawks 3-2 on home ice. Portland scored all three of their goals on the power play.

Cole Moberg opened the scoring for the Cougars on the powerplay just over halfway through the first with his 12th of the season. The Cougars outshot the Winterhawks 15-8 in the first period. 

The second period was much of the same as the Cougars outshot Portland 17-9. Matej Toman got his ninth of the year for the Cougars two minutes into the middle frame. The Winterhawks then got their first of their three power play goals with a goal by Jake Gricius. The Cougars would take a 2-1 lead into the third period.

Portland tied the game up early in the third after a Jackson Leppard hooking penalty with Josh Paterson scoring for Portland. There would not be any more scoring until just over five minutes left in the third. Another Cougars penalty sent the Winterhawks to the power play where Joachim Blichfeld scored his league-leading 53rd goal and 110th point. 

Portland went 3/7 on the powerplay on the night overall while Prince George went 1/5. The Cougars outshot Portland 42-27 on the night. Joel Hofer got the win for Portland stopping 40 of 42 shots. Taylor Gauthier stopped 24 of 27 in the loss for the Cougars.

The game between the Cougars and Portland Winterhawks last night was part of the WHL’s Suits Up with Don Cherry to Promote Organ Donation campaign. The Cougars wore special Don Cherry themed jerseys that are up for auction to promote organ donation.
