PRINCE GEORGE – Despite the recent spread of the coronavirus, the World Women’s Curling Championships will still go ahead in Prince George March 14 to the 22.

According to the World Curling Federation, the World Health Organization does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions that would impact the event.

The federation says its priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of athletes and officials.

“We’re doing everything that the World Health Organization has recommended when it comes to precautions to avoid the virus,” says Curling Canada’s Terry Morris. “All of those recommendations will be in place once we open the venue (CN Centre) to the public.”

Northern Health has been working with organizers to assess the risk of the spread of infection.

“The risk of illness due to the COVID-19 remains low to Canadians and British Columbians at this time,” says Regional Manager, Media Relations and Public Affairs Eryn Collins. “Northern Health has been working with the organizers and partners for risk assessment.”

She says community members can be instrumental in preventing the spread of illness by following such guidelines as staying home if sick, proper hand washing and clean surface areas.
