PRINCE GEORGE – Northern Health says it has conducted just over 850 lab tests.

“The cases that have been lab-confirmed to date are from across the North,” says Dr. Raina Fumerton, Acting Chief Medical Health Officer. “So in our large and small communities across the entire region. Many have been linked to travel but some have been acquired in the community. The majority of cases of COVID will not be confirmed through lab testing. it’s important that people understand that.”

She says people think northern B.C. should assume COVID-19 is present in their community and should act accordingly. That means self-isolation and physical distancing.

Northern Health says it structuring its response along the same line as the World Health Organization’s six phases of recovery. Northern Health is planning around the first four phases of recovery.

“The first phase of work that we undertook was very closely aligned to the Provincial Health officer’s directives. The categories of work that we undertook in that first phase were to ensure that the screening that was available in each community was conducted in accordance with the direction from the Provincial Health Office.”

The second phase was the establishment of the call centre and virtual clinic, which were well-received.
