Cougars claim Western Conference crown, will play Chiefs in Round 1 of WHL post-season

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars are Western Conference champions.

Riley Heidt notched three goals for the Cats in a 5-2 win over the visiting Kamloops Blazers on Saturday (March 24) at CN Centre, the victory securing the No. 1 seed and a matchup against the No. 8 Spokane Chiefs in Round 1.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven series will get underway at 7 p.m. on Friday (March 29) at CN Centre.

Prince George will host Game 2 on Saturday (March 30) before the series shifts south of the border for the next two games.

The Chiefs (29-32-5-1) and Cougars (49-15-1-3) split their season series, with each club winning a pair of games and two contests going to overtime.

Goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen made 27 saves on Saturday to pick up the win between the pipes.

Ashton Ferster had a pair of goals for the Blazers in support of netminder Jesse Sanche, who stopped 34 shots in a losing effort.

Kamloops (20-42-3-3) logged its eighth consecutive defeat to finish last in league standings.
