Salt Storage Problematic For City

The discussion around the sani-dump generated a great deal of discussion around Council Chamber
around the future of the Quinn Street recycling depot.

A staff report identified the need to build a new salt storage facility at the 18th Avenue yards, which is
currently, under-capacity and is not contained.
The City is looking at the current location of the recycling centre at the corner of 18th Avenue and
Quinn Street as an option to built a salt storage facility.

“Currently we are under-capacity by about half at that location,” explained Gina Layte-Liston, the
Director of Public Works, who suggested it is not beyond the realm of possible the City could run out of
salt for snow operations. “The other major concern is that we don’t have containment.”
The Regional District of Fraser Fort George currently leases that site from the City and that lease
expires in April.
However, City Manager Kathleen Soltis says the City is looking at renewing that lease for another year.

The proposed facility is in the 2019 capital plan.
