No Snow, No Problem: Pros and Cons For Local Businesses

PRINCE GEORGE- It’s hard to believe there is still green grass around the city as a lack of snowy conditions isn’t the norm at the end of November. The average temperature at this time of the year is about minus one in Prince George, but this week our temperatures have fluctuated between three and six degrees. It’s welcome news for those in the construction business. Hopson Construction says it’s putting the finishing touches on a few projects more quickly as cold weather negatively impacts productivity. “We have two remaining that are finishing up, trying to get everyone in for Christmas of course,” said John Hopson, “with no snow it really allows us to push hard to meet those deadlines.”

But a lack of the white stuff has the Hart Ski Hill hopefully looking at the forecast. “Ideally we’d be starting to pack our snow if we had that here,” said Jess Hudson, “we’re ready for it.” However, it hasn’t impacted the season yet as it usually opens for the season in the second week of December. It says minus 10-degree conditions are perfect for snowmaking, and once it’s able to do that… it’s hoping for another record-breaking season. “Our man-made snow doesn’t melt, we still had it in June, it takes a long time to go away once we start with it.”

Cooler temperatures are expected throughout the weekend and there is potential for snow at the end of next week.
