PRINCE GEORGE–The city of Prince George has made a small new addition to its cement garbage cans throughout the city.

Recycling baskets have been added to 50 out of around 70 cement garbage cans in the city in hopes to deter dumpster divers from making a mess when fishing through the trash for bottles and cans; as well as to prevent people from tossing their recyclables in the garbage. “We decided to order those baskets because we were having issues with people going through the garbage containers, pulling recyclables out so they could take them in for the deposits,” said Mike DiMassimo, Foreman of Solid Waste for the city.

City Councillor Garth Frizzell says that the initiative is also great for the local landfill, “every ounce that we take away from the landfill is another additional time that we get without having to close that one down and add to a new one.”

DiMassimo says the baskets are permanent and says the city hopes to add more to the rest of the cement garbage cans throughout the city soon.
