Prince George RCMP urges Halloween safety as trick-or-treaters prepare to hit the streets

PRINCE GEORGE — With Halloween just around the corner, the Prince George RCMP is reminding residents to make safety a priority while enjoying the annual festivities.

“This is a busy time of year for celebrations,” said Corporal Jennifer Cooper, BC RCMP spokesperson for Northern B.C. “We want to make sure that everyone in our community has fun while staying safe.”

Police are encouraging trick-or-treaters and motorists alike to take extra precautions as children and families head out after dark on October 31.

Among the safety recommendations for trick-or-treaters, RCMP advises wearing bright or reflective costumes to improve visibility, ensuring costumes fit properly to prevent tripping, and carrying flashlights or glow sticks while walking through neighbourhoods. Children and families are also encouraged to stay on sidewalks, cross streets at designated intersections, and let others know their planned route while carrying a cellphone in case of emergency.

Drivers are being reminded to slow down in residential areas where large numbers of children may be present. Police are also urging motorists to stay alert for youngsters who may enter roadways unexpectedly and to ensure any costume worn while driving does not affect visibility or vehicle operation.

As Halloween celebrations often include parties and gatherings, RCMP is also emphasizing the importance of planning ahead for safe transportation. Anyone consuming alcohol is encouraged to arrange a safe ride home rather than getting behind the wheel.

The RCMP is also reminding residents who plan to use fireworks to familiarize themselves with the City of Prince George’s bylaws and regulations. Concerns about the misuse of fireworks should be reported through the non-emergency line at 250-560-3300.

Police stress that 911 should only be used for emergencies and not for complaints related to fireworks.
