Cougars drop home opener to Giants

Sep 21, 2019 | 8:23 AM

Justin Sourdiff’s 3rd-period goal was the difference for the Vancouver Giants Friday night as they spoiled the Prince George Cougar’s home opener with a 5-3 win at the CN Centre.

Vancouver would hop out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening frame thanks to Fort St.John product Tristan Nielsen breaking the ice and a power-play goal from Seth Bafaro.

However, it didn’t take long for the Cougars to get on the board themselves.

Just 51 seconds after the Bafaro tally the Cougars would get to within one thanks to Cole Moberg.

The Giants would restore their two-goal lead in the middle stanza thanks to Lukas Svejkovsky, but once again the Cougars would have an answer.

Tyson Upper would blast home his first of the campaign under the arm of Giants netminder Trent Miner with 3:24 remaining in the 2nd to get the home team back to within one.

Just before the middle frame was over, Upper would strike again on a beautiful tip from a sharp angle which fooled Miner and evened the contest at 3 going into the 3rd.

Unfortunately for the home town fans that would be the final time the Cougars would find the back of the net in the contest.

Justin Sourdif, a projected 1st round draft pick in the 2020 NHL draft would put the Giants ahead early in the third thanks to a solo dash on the right-wing, which he finished with a gorgeous shot passed Taylor Gauthier to make it 4-3.

Vancouver would add an empty-net goal to secure the 5-3 win.

The two clubs will collide once again Saturday night at the CN Centre. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
