Sound: more than meets the ear

Each and every day we experience sound.

How we interpret it though can be different and now a new exhibit at Exploration Place is allowing residents the chance to experience sound in ways they could only imagine.

“Sound just Sound really brings aspects of the sciences of sound,” shared Assistant Curator with Exploration Place Chad Hellenius.

“The exhibit breaks it down into three different themes. The nature of sound. Not all sounds are the same. Some are big, some are low, and some are very quiet as a dog whistle. It looks at how sound travels. Sound doesn’t travel the same in all environments How we receive sound. How we hear sound. Not all animals hear sound the same way. So we can compare the way we receive sound to how other animals receive sound.”

The traveling exhibit is beginning to make its way across the country with Prince George being the first stop.

“It has come out of Sherbrooke museum and science and nature in Quebec. We were approached by them when they were seeking funding through Canadian heritage to build this in the production stage. We wrote a support letter for them really early on and because of that support letter they approached us as soon as they received funding and we got to be the first stop for the exhibit.”

The exhibit has been at Exploration since mid-September and has already received some great feedback.

“This exhibit is great because it is really interactive, but also good for all ages. I have learned a lot going through it myself and I lots of kids are having lots of fun going through themselves.”

The exhibit will be on at Exploration Place until January 6th.
