PRINCE GEORGE – Roughly a thousand Duchess Park Secondary School student packed the gymnasium for a federal candidates forum. It was organized by the school’s Leadership Class.

“My friend and I talked about it at the beginning of the year to do something to get everybody interested in politics,” explains Kiersten Mikkelsen of the Leader Class. “Political events are really key to our world these days, so inform other students and kids who are the next generation of voter.”

Each of the candidates who did turn out had a few minutes to introduce themselves and outline party policy before the floor was opened to the students.

They had questions ranging from the NDP’s environmental policies, the Green’s position on infrastrcture and jobs and everyone’s position on Quebec and Bill 21.

“This election is not just about Canadians who are 18 years and older. It’s about Canadians of all ages,” says Matt Logan, Humanities Instructor at Duchess. “I’ve seen in my own classes, to a surprising degree, the level of engagement.”

Mikkelson says the hope is to eliminate the confusion and fear about actually voting for “the next generation of voter.”

The school will also be holding a mock election on October 15th.
