PRINCE GEORGE–Feb.11th 2020 is “Safer Internet Day” and the RCMP are reminding families and adults to start conversations with youth about internet safety.

“The RCMP encourages parents to talk to their children about internet safety and the risks associated with using the world-wide web” says Cpl. Craig Douglass, spokesperson for the Prince George RCMP. “Every year, the Prince George RCMP receives a variety of reports related to youth and the internet. Whether it is child luring, bullying, sexting or other incidents, it happens in our community.”

There are risks that come with social media and the BC RCMP has some tips in order to better educate parents and youth as well.

Safer Internet Tips:

  • (Parents) Be aware of your teen’s digital life, work with them on setting boundaries, acting responsibly, and staying safe online.
  • (Teens) Connecting with friends online and using social media tools can be fun but keep informed to make smart decisions
  • What is sexting? These messages are intended for only one person, however, the sender has little control over these messages becoming public
  • Consequences for misusing the internet–online actions that you think are all in ‘good fun’ could lead to criminal charges
