VICTORIA — Another 444 new cases of COVID-19 have been announced in BC for a total of 47,510. The new cases include five epi-linked. In Northern Health, there are 22 new cases. There are 9,481 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. There are 357 individuals currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 84 of whom are in intensive care. A total of 36,094 people who tested positive have recovered. The death toll now sits at 777.

“Because community spread continues, even if you have been doing all you can to protect yourself and those around you, it is important to know the symptoms of COVID-19 and get tested if symptoms develop,” read the update.

“In particular, if you develop a cough, a loss of sense of smell or taste, fever or chills, or have difficulty breathing, contact your health-care professional or call 811 to get tested right away. Testing sites will be open over the holidays.”

As for vaccinations, 4,108 people have received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in BC. Vaccine clinics are underway in Northern Health as of today.

“With more British Columbians receiving vaccines, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. But immunization won’t happen overnight. Through the holiday season and into the new year, we need to continue following public health orders and take the daily actions we know will protect those around us,” Premier John Horgan said in a statement.

The Province of BC has also formally extended the provincial state of emergency to support response efforts. It will now last until January 5, 2021.
