Scoring Big: Prince George Lacrosse Box achieves goal of re-opening

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Lacrosse Box has officially re-opened and will be free to use this summer.

The Box, which was closed down last year due to COVID-19, recently underwent some renovations that were needed to meet safety standards from the City.

“Basically it was a full cleanup, the facility had been quite run-down. We got all new wood benches, we re-painted the whole arena and then all the chain link fence had to get replaced. Once we had all that done, the City approved it safety-wise and that allowed it to be re-opened,” said Chris Scott, Assistant Commissioner of PG Senior Lacrosse.

For Scott, all the work that he and volounteers have done are to bring the game of lacrosse (among other things) back to Prince George, as soon as they could.

“I just wanna see people using it honestly, whether it’s lacrosse, hockey, roller skating, or even skateboarding. I just want to see people in the city getting back to sport. We’ve all been locked away too much with COVID and that’s why this year we’re not gonna charge any user groups any fees to use it.”

For the Prince George Senior Men’s Lacrosse League, they’ve had last season, as well as this season cancelled due to the pandemic. With this facility re-opening however, they now have somewhere to practice this year in the meantime.

“It’s just a great opportunity for the guys to get lacrosse sticks in their hands again, have some fun, feel a bit of that comradery that we’ve all been missing for the past two cancelled seasons and almost re-introducing yourself to lacrosse,” says Scott. “Now we have a place that’s designed specifically for lacrosse.

For Chris Scott and his family, the rejuvenation of this facility goes beyond lacrosse, as it is a way to honour and remember his father, who was very well known in the community of Prince George.

“It means a lot to me, a lot to me and my family,” says Scott. “I think it’s been published enough that I can say we will be looking for a sponsor and eventually this will be the Glen ‘Moose’ Scott Memorial Lacrosse Box.”

“As a lot of people in Prince George know how he used to phone and stop in, I guess I’ll be taking taking over that now too. But yeah, moving forward that’s what I’d like to see, is the Glen ‘Moose’ Scott Memorial Lacrosse Box and a nice big sign facing Massey Drive.”

Scott would like to thank all the volounteers that came out and helped the Box get back to what it once was. The list includes: Victory Paint and Mercantile, the City of Prince George, Bulldog Fencing, Panago Pizza, and the Prince George Senior Lacrosse League.

If you would like to book time at the facility, send a message with your request to the PG Senior Lacrosse Facebook page.
