PRINCE GEORGE—On Tuesday night, Audrey McKinnon, NDP candidate for the Cariboo-Prince George riding officially launched her campaign for the federal election.

It’s the first time McKinnon has run in a federal election. Speaking in front of dozens of supporters, she spoke on her campaign focuses: tackling the drug crisis, fighting climate change, and working on affordability.

Speaking on the drug crisis, the NDP candidate said that the government needs to address poverty, decriminalize drug use, and create safe supply.

McKinnon says that one of the way to tackle climate change is by moving away from fossil fuels.

“We need to get off of fossil fuels and we need to do it in a way that we’re still investing in the people who are wanting to bring home a paycheque to their families. So that’s about creating infrastructure for alternative energies and alternative jobs that are sustainable long into the future. So that we can continue to support these people or they can support themselves,” said McKinnon.

Speaking on the drug crisis, the NDP candidate expressed her concerns regarding the high overdose rate in the province.

“We have the highest rate of overdose and drug toxicity death in the province, here in Northern B.C. That is tragic and there are solutions to this.” said McKinnon.

McKinnon says that the government needs to address poverty, decriminalize drug use, and create a safe supply.

McKinnon’s campaign office can be found at 1240 4th Avenue.

Incumbent Todd Doherty is running for re-election as the Conservative candidate for Cariboo-Prince George.

There have been no formal candidate announcements for the Liberal or Green Party.

The federal election will begin on September 20.
