PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George is once again coming together to support a local farmer who had his leg amputated over the summer.

John Ryser and his family settled here in the early 1900’s harvesting many pieces of land around Prince George with the most current plot out in Red Rock, where the 89-year-old, still farms to this day. John has been active in the agricultural community as one of the founding members of the Prince George Farmers’ Market and has been delivering seed potatoes to Art Knapps for 50 years.

On June 25, at the beginning of the heatwave, John was determined to fix a damaged tire on his tractor. Unfortunately, he lost his footing and the tire fell on top of him, pinning him overnight.

“So, his friend Margaret went down the next day to check up on him and found him, and immediately called 9-1-1 and had him brought to the hospital,” explained Laura Ryser, who is John’s niece “About a month ago now, they had to go in and amputate the lower part of the leg.”

John has been in recovery since, worried about his farm and his crops being wasted, however, the community and his family, won’t let that happen. They have been farming and selling his goods at the PG Farmers market and this weekend will be hosting a fundraiser in celebration of him.

Donations have been pouring in, with the city purchasing all of John’s pumpkins to give away at the Fall Fair. The Legendary John’s Spud Truck will also be there, with those famous potatoes frying up and half of the proceeds going to help John.
