PRINCE GEORGE – The plan was to have an in-person Natural Resources convention in mid-January. It would have been the first in-person forum since January 2020. The last pre-COVID events to take place in Prince George.

“Planning for a hybrid event and hoping for a significant in-person event in Prince George,” explains Sarah Weber, President & CEO of C# Alliance, organizers of the Natural Resources Forum. She suggests if the event were afforded the half capacity that sports events operate under, it would still be in-person. Instead, the event will be virtual again this year.

The event was being billed by the City as the first event to happen in the post-COVID “economic recovery.”

“I wasn’t really surprised because it feels like we’re never going to move out of this current status. I’m on quite a few organizing committees for events that have had to have back-up plan, after back-up plan after back-up plan.”

The last in-person Natural Resources Forum and Weber says over the course of the convention, 1,200 people attended at different times.

Events like conventions and sports bring a lot of money to communities. Sometimes into the millions.

“It’s not small dollars,” says Ramsay. “There’s accommodation, there’s eating out at local restaurants, supporting our local business, our downtown. It really adds up.”

She says it’s frustrating when Prince George, which has vaccination rates in the high 90’s but has to pay the price because other communities have abysmal vaccination rates.
