Potentially severe economic impacts could result from Canfor shutdown

PRINCE GEORGE – Operations at the Canfor’s PG Pulp Mill coming to a close at the end of March could hit the economy in a big way say commerce and industry experts.

Since the 1960’s Prince George has seen steam rise from the stacks on PG Pulp Mill Road, not only a visual reminder of the industry activity carrying the regional economy but also carrying the identity of a city.

Todd Corrigall, CEO at the Prince George Chamber of Commerce said when the pulp line does shut the impacts will stretch well beyond those affected and into small and medium size businesses in the city.

In 2021, Pulp and Paper was an industry worth $3.9 billion and was BC’s fourth most valuable export. In total that sector alone over 11,000 people are employed with high-paying jobs.

Natural resource expert Joel McKay said he believes Northern BC as a whole needs to come together to find a solution in the transition away from forestry. McKay added forestry will always exist but will change significantly in the years ahead.

McKay said he expects over 1,000 people in the city to see an impact in their employment as a result of the shutdown.
