PRINCE GEORGE – In the aftermath of the first major rainfall event this year, water has started pooling up in ditches across the city. It’s a normal occurence during Spring Freshet, but every year it brings the risk of erosion… and that’s the situation at an unassuming culvert on Estavilla Drive.

Concerned residences have sounded the alarm over the erosion to City Hall, warning of the potential of damage to the roadway if the issue persists. The City Yard’s top brass were on site early monday morning to assess the situation. As it stands the damaged culvert has been assessed, and it’s been found there’s no immediate risk to the public.

In a statement from City Hall about the erosion, the City said:

‘We’ll continue to monitor the Estavilla Drive area until minor remedial repairs to deal with erosion at the inlet can be scheduled for later this spring.’ – Prince George City Hall

There are hundreds of kilometers of ditches and culverts city-wide, in addition to over 1000kms of naturally existing creeks and streams integrated into the City’s Storm Water management system. Keeping watch over it all during the peak melt, specialized ‘ponding patrols’ who inspect problem areas, hoping to catch issues like the one of Estavilla Drive before they get worse.

If you’d like to report any instances of street flooding or ponding you can do so using the city’s 311 service line.
