Passport office opening delayed due to strike

Apr 25, 2023 | 2:58 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — The long awaited passport office for Prince George and Northern BC was slated to open today but there will be no passport applications being processed today, as the opening of the office was postponed indefinitely, meaning Northerners hoping to get a passport will have wait a little while longer.

Taylor Bachrach, MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley was a champion for the opening of a passport office in north.

It’s unfortunate to hear that the opening date has had to be moved because of the labour action that’s taking place. I know folks who are really looking forward to having a passport office up and running in the North. I know that’s going to happen at some point here and certainly look forward to that date. – Taylor Bachrach, MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley (NDP)

Karina Gould is the minister responsible for Service Canada, and in a statement to CKPG News from her Press Secretary Philippe-Alexandre Langlois, says that “A public sector strike is currently affecting passport offices across the country, which also impacts the opening date of the Prince George 10-day service site. However, I can assure you that once the strike is over and services resume, passport services will be available in Prince George.”

The federal government and the union are still at the bargaining table, trying to negotiate a deal, but there is no indication on when a deal might be reached, leaving passport services in a state of uncertainty.
