Evacuation Alert issued for Fort St. John, as early season wildfires continue to burn out of control

PRINCE GEORGE – A smoky haze hung low in the skies over Prince George today, giving the horizon a sickly ashen-blue tint, a sure sign of early season wildfires now burning into their second week.

A new pair of fires we’re spotted in the northern part of the province over the weekend. One at Stoddard Creek, in the vicinity of the previously reported Red Creek fire currently affecting Fort St John, and a second wildfire of note father North at Donnie Creek, impacting a region frequented by commercial industries.

These latest wildfires have made the situation in the North Peace region that much more complicated for emergency response crews. A new set of evacuation alerts and orders have been issued for both the areas surrounding Stoddard Creek & Donnie Creek fires, and an evacuation alert has just been issued for Fort St John.

Additional wildfire crews have been mobilized and dispatched to the region in response, and while some promising progress has been made in the fight, historic dought conditions and looming unseasonable high temperatures, which are forecasted to persist, makes the wildfire situation in Northern BC tense and dynamic, with major changes day-by-day, and hour-by-hour.
