PRINCE GEORGE— Trick or treating can be an exciting experience for kids but for some parents the worry of how candy can affect kids overall health can be the spookiest part of the season. Lise Luppens, a Population Health Dietitian from Northern Health, provides some recommendations on striking a balance.

“Before the kids go trick or treating, offer them a meal or filling snack. It’s best if they are well nourished for the exciting times ahead.” Says Luppens, “When your kids come home from trick or treating, let them enjoy their candy stash and eat as much as they want.”

Luppens recommends that a day or two after halloween start setting up rules and treat candy like any other food. By only bringing it out at meal time kids are not just eating sugar but also proteins, fats, and fibre as well, to support balance.

“When they can trust that they can enjoy their candy at predictable times, they become less obsessed with it. Over time, the novelty wears off, Says Luppens, “This is an important skill, not just at Halloween, but throughout the year as well.”

Luppen further elaborates that by providing a structure around candy it can help children develop important skills involving moderation, prevent power struggles, and preserve the joy of Halloween.
