CARIBOO—It is just over a month before the Lhtako Quesnel 2024 B.C. Winter Games kick off on February 22 with as many as 1,700 athletes, coaches and officials expected to participate.

Ahead of the games, Enbridge, an energy transportation company which operates a pipeline system that is positioned near Quesnel, donated $25,000 to help ensure a smoother and higher-quality sport event. The cheque was presented to the Lhatko Quesnel 2024 B.C. Winter Games at the new Lhtako Dene longhouse located on their territory. The company’s donation was made through it’s Fueling Futures program, which invests in communities and youth through financial donation and volunteer work.

“For us, this is more than just a sporting event. All the participants gathering here in Quesnel will take home not only medals and memories of their competitions, but the stories and knowledge about our traditions and our people.”

Tim Mitchell, Lhtako Dene Nation Councilor

The Lhatko Quesnel 2024 B.C. Winter Games marks the first time in 46 years the BC Winter Games is co-named by the host community and an Indigenous community, the Lhtako Dene Nation. This partnership not only highlights the Indigenous community’s culture and way of life, but also recognizes their traditional territory.

“We are thankful for the $25,000 contribution from Enbridge towards the Lhtako Quesnel 2024 BC Winter Games. Contributions like this ensure that these Games are a success in February and leave a lasting, positive impact on the community following the Games.”

Brian Balkwill, Lhtako Quesnel 2024 BC Winter Games President

Volunteer support makes big events like this possible and while over a thousand volunteers have signed up to help out with the games, additional hands are still needed especially in food services, overnight shifts in accommodation and certified first-aid responders. If you’d like to help out you can sign up on the BC Winter Games website.

Lhtako Dene First Nation, City of Quesnel, The Cariboo Regional District and School District 28 are the partners bringing the Lhtako Quesnel 2024 BC Winter Games to life. Athletes will be staying in the schools for this four-day event. Quesnel last hosted the BC Winter Games in 2000.
