January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

PRINCE GEORGE— January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month with the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. announcing the focus this month is on living life to the fullest.

Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that destroys braincells through a build of plague in the neurons. The deterration causes memory, reasoning, and emotional regulation to deteriorate overtime.

While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s those living with the condition can maintain their quality of life through medication but also by staying active mentally, physically, and socially.

In the video we take a look into Brian’s Stanley and his efforts to continue achieving in the athletics space. With the support of his family Brian is looking forward at completing his goals.

If you suspect that you or a loved one has dementia, the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. recommends speaking with a doctor about your concerns.

Some other common signs of dementia include:

  • Short term and long term memory loss,
  • Difficulty performing familiar tasks,
  • Problems with language and abstract thinking and
  • Changes in mood or behaviour.
