What’s next in the BC campaign?

PRINCE GEORGE – The doors were closed at MLA Shirley Bond’s office this morning, following a stunning announcement that the BC United’s election run has been halted. Some on the BC United caucus noted they were unaware of the plans and were “blindsided.”

Long-standing Liberal MLA Pat Bell suspects what is likely transpiring with those BC United candidates.

“A lot of emotions, I’m sure emotions are running very high in all camps right now and my hope is that everyone kind of takes the weekend to think things through and really consider what their future might look like.”

In the meantime, for Prince George-North Cariboo Conservative candidate Sheldon Clare, it’s another day on the campaign trial. “I can’t comment on the actions of others or anything like that. I can only comment on my campaign, which is going great. I’m not concerned about any what other people may do. As far as I’m concerned, there’s an election and the Conservative candidate in the riding in Sheldon Clare, and he is out campaigning.”

Bell himself has been in a similar situation. In 2013, after planning to run in the Prince George-Mackenzie riding once again, announced his decision to step away due to health reasons. He says decisions like that are not easy.

“I think that’s the same thing that everyone has to do. And it’s not easy because when you’re stuck in a place like this, your emotions are really raw and it’s very easy for people to say things that they would like to pull back a week from now or two weeks from now or six weeks from now. So, you know, I’m sure that all of our community leaders are thinking about this right now.”

Every candidate has their own foot soldiers – from the party faithful to the staffers -those who attend every campaign office opening and every election night. There’s likely some apprehension there, too. And he says it’s the job of every leader to address that.

“The good times are easy to lead, and it’s when stuff like this happens that it’s really pivotal. And people that have followed, Shirley and others, over the years are looking for leadership and they’re looking for where do we go now.”

At 2 p.m. Thursday, Shirley Bond announced she has opted not to run in the election and will address the media on Tuesday.
