Canada’s first publicly funded long-term care home based on the concepts of a dementia village has been receiving some special visitors. The Home for Us care model strives to make life as home-like as possible for residents of the Comox-based, Providence Living at The Views with the use of weekly kitten visits. According to the Director of site operations for Providence Living Kelley Romeril what started off as a small personal gesture has evolved into something much more.

” So recently, we started a new partnership with the Cats Society which is the Cat Saving and Teaching Society, a local rescue society here in town, And how it all started is pretty personal actually. One of the members of the group has his mother living here on site with us. This member was bringing his cat to visits with his mother and realized how much it affected her day specifically how much joy it brought. He thought he would like to share this with others so he went back to his organization and asked them if they wanted to be a part of it. Together we formed this partnership where the group brings 5 to 7 kittens weekly to visit our residents along with volunteers to support with the visits and we are seeing friendships forming.” said Romeril.

The residents have frequent visits with the kittens as part of the Home for Us model which will also helps to socialize the baby cats who were rescued by the CATS Society. The program is already showing positive results for both the residents and the felines.

“So it’s really great for the kittens because it provides an opportunity to teach them socializing skills. It’s also really great for the residents to have the the cats come and visit, and they’re happy for any furry visit. We see tons of benefits when we have pet visits. ” added Romeril.

Providence Living says that pet visits will be part of every one of its current or future builds including Prince George, Smithers and Quesnel.
