PRINCE GEORGE – It’s about time. That’s the sense from the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association about the Trudeau Government’s re-approval of the Trans Mountain pipeline project.

“We saw billions of dollars leaving Canada. We saw thousands of jobs sacrificed. And, really, we’re seeing investor confidence at an all-time low,” says Mike Davis, Vice President of Regional Initiatives.

He says he was pleased to see no strings attached to the approval and is okay with what the federal government has planned for the profits. As part of today’s announcement, Trudeau has also committed to putting every dollar the federal government earns from the pipeline into investments in clean energy projects. Those profits have the potential of reaching $500 million a year.

However, the ICBA’s optimism is couched.

“We hope this is not the last major project. It has not been easy to do business in Canada,” says Davis. “With some of the new federal regulations it’s going to be even more challenging. Bill C-48, Bill C-69. Those are things that are not making it easy for projects to happen.”

The federals government assures there will be shovels in the ground this construction season.
