PRINCE GEORGE – Local governments, large and small, from across BC have signed letters of support for a campaign launched by the BC Library Trustees Association. The 20 Million in 2020 campaign is calling on the provincial government to funding to $20 million in the next provincial budget.

“The library’s budget is about four million dollars and of that, about 92 percent of that is provided by the City of Prince George,” explains Paul Burry, Interim Chief Librarian for the Prince George Library.

The remainder comes from the province. The total provincial commitment is $14 million spread over more than 70 libraries ane that amount has not changed in ten years, despite inflationary increases and the like. The Trustees Association wants the funding levels increased to $20 million dollars in the next provincial budget.

The letters of support for libraries will be taken to the Union of BC municipalities convention in September, in order that a unified voice is heard in Victoria during budget discussions.
