The City shines a light on a solar-powered street lamp

PRINCE GEORGE – For many communities, outdoor lighting is an integral part of urban living. It’s known to make the roadways and pedestrian pathways safe.

Earlier this year the City launched a pilot project to test an off the grid solar powered street light.

The solar-powered street light stands along the side of 1^st ave near Moore’s Meadow Park.

For the last six months, the City of Prince George has been putting the lighting system through tests.

This is the city’s first independent solar-powered street light. Many of the lights throughout the city are attached to the power grid.

According to the city, the benefit to this type of street light, the energy to operate the light comes from solar energy that was stored in batteries during the day.

The average cost for a traditional street light standard is around $10 000. For a stand-alone solar-powered street lighting system hovers around the $15 000.

To get a better understanding of how the independent solar-powered light works the lighting system and pole will be moved to other locations throughout the city.

The solar light pilot project will run for a full year so city officials can get better understands of how this new technology works with the changing seasons in our community. Watch the full story:
