Hydrologist assist in forecasting streamflows

PRINCE GEORGE – The northern interior of the province is experiencing high water flows in streams and rivers.

Keeping track of the amount of precipitation and forecasting stream flows is a function of a hydrologist a science that many may not be aware of.

Much of our region has been under a high streamflow advisory where river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly.

These advisories and warning notifications are based on tracking precipitation gauge locations around the province.

According to UNBC Professor Dr. Stephen Dery, its a combination of all the gauges that helped determine that during the month of June the Prince George area had record precipitation.

More precipitation is in the forecast. Officials are encouraging residents to be prepared if levels were to rise.

According to the BC River forecast centre discharge forecasts are derived from a hydrologic model using forecast meteorology, and from a routing model.
