Border closure extended

PRINCE GEORGE – Not surprising and prudent are just a couple of words used by tourism operators to the news that the Government of Canada has extended the border closure to August 21.

It means the rubber-tire traffic Tourism Prince George relies on isn’t coming this way. Instead, it is focusing on intra-provincial travel.

“The phase we’re in right now is really on provincial travel with British Columbians and you will see that a lot of the marketing is geared to that.”

While the Prince George Airport isn’t as reliant on US travellers, there are still some impacts.

“It’s very seasonal. We don’t have any direct flights in and out of the United States from Prince George. However, depending on the various activities – hunting and guiding are huge impacts. Not necessarily right in Prince George, but to the surrounding communities.”

However, as was evidenced by three separate outbreaks in Kelowna, travel around the province must be done smartly.
