PRINCE GEORGE–The Canadian Medical Association Foundation (CMAF) has awarded the City of Prince George with $48,000 which will allow for the continued use of the Downtown Washroom Program.

The donation will reach the City through the COVID-19 Community Response Fund for Vulnerable Populations–the result of a collaboration between CMAF and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).

“These new funds will offer much-needed support to our community and will empower our municipality to help those who need it the most during this pandemic.”–Garth Frizzell, City of Prince George Councillor and FCM First Vice-President

The closure of some civic facilities and many businesses due to COVID-19 has diminished the number of options for washrooms in the downtown for marginalized individuals.

The City says that access to bathrooms and hand washing for the most vulnerable in our communities is essential to mitigating the spread of disease transmission. Currently, there are washrooms located in the Canada Games Plaza across from the PG Civic Centre. The bathroom initiative was started in mid-April to help offset lost access to washroom facilities in civic buildings and local businesses.

The initiative was supposed to end on July 13 but with the donation from CMAF will continue until the end of November.
