FORT ST. JAMES – It’s almost time for residents of Fort St James to cast their ballots.

This past March, Bev Playfair announced her resignation from the position of mayor, resulting in the town needing to hold a by-election, all while they and the rest of the world deal with a global pandemic.

“In doing so we instantly thought that this is going to be a game-changer when we decide to hold an election,” said David Schroeter, Fort St. James’ Chief Administrative Officer “As such, we’ve been working to ensure we have taken the steps required since that time with formalized plans being developed in mid-June to ensure the election is one that voters can cast their ballots safely.”

Fort St James isn’t the only community in the province needing to hold a by-election. The community of Smithers is as well after Taylor Bachrach was elected as MP in last October’s federal election. due to the virus pandemic, the BC government suspended all municipal elections and by-elections until recently.

“We’ve been able to benefit from the experience of Smithers and other communities within the province of British Columbia,” explained Schroeter. “We’ve worked together collaboratively. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has facilitated some fo these discussions and has produced guidance for elections in order to ensure that we are keeping voters safe through the elections, practising all of the rules we need to be practising.”

When Playfair stepped down, Dr. Paul Stent, a councillor, took over the role of Acting Mayor. Stent states he will not be looking to run for the position of mayor in the by-election.

“I found it very difficult to balance my work and being mayor at the same time,” explained Dr. Stent as he works as a physician as well. “It’s been very hard, particularly as I’m picking up experience being a councillor as of the end of 2018. So I won’t be running for the position, but I will continue on council.”

Once elected, the next mayor will serve for the remainder of the term, which will end in the fall of 2022.

Nominations are being accepted until Friday, August 21st at 4:00.
