It’s not your average coffee shop: The Makerie

PRINCE GEORGE–”We are a place that’s really trying to build people’s engagement with creativity.”

Kim Hayhurst says that The Makerie–one of the newest additions to Prince George’s downtown–is not your typical coffee shop.

“I really believe that Prince George, and the north has an absolutely incredible arts community, but we don’t talk about it with the same kind of pride that other communities do.”–Kim Hayhurst, Owner, The Makerie

For Hayhurst, The Makerie is a place to introduce people to the local art scene, while allowing them to embrace their creative side.

Hayhurst says The Makerie offers that space for adults looking to unleash their creativity–even if they’ve never done it before.

When customers walk in they are greeted by the cafe and a craft menu on the wall. Guests are then able to enjoy a cup of hot Joe or tea and a snack and choose a craft to tackle. Crafts include string art, banner making, and even shoe painting.

“Shoe customization is a massive trend that is happening,” said Hayhurst as she donned her very own customized shoes. Creators are able to bring in their own shoes, belts or even purses to paint, as long as the material is leather or vinyl Hayhurst says their paints will stick.

A five-dollar fee is charged to those looking to use the space to work on-site, study or bring their own craft project, however, the first hour is free with the purchase of a drink. Hayhurst adds that while many people may see them as a cafe The Makerie is primarily a maker space for those seeking to rekindle, find or embrace their artistic side.
