PG Minor Hockey changes traditional Christmas plans with Skills Competition

PRINCE GEORGE – Typically, the weekend leading up to Christmas would have the Prince George Minor Hockey Association putting on their Christmas Tournament. However, due to the on-going pandemic of COVID-19, this weekend looked quite a bit different.

“In lieu of games, we wanted to do something fun for the kids. We transitioned to a bit of a skills competition instead of games. Each team gets their own ice time and runs a bit of an obstacle course for the little kids. The older kids are doing the hardest shot and fastest skater. And they’re all going to get a goodie bag and a prize at the end, just to give them something positive to leave the Christmas break with and hopefully we get back to games in January.”

Director of Hockey Operations with the association, Steven O’Rourke says despite the change in both tradition and format, he believes it was a successful event.

And to top it off, this may just be the start of something new for Minor Hockey in Prince George.

A few months spent on the ice now, the hockey association says things are going smoothly considering the circumstances, backed by a strong group of volunteers and even managing to retain the vast majority of their usual registrations.

We’re only down about 75 kids from last year, which is really good considering the COVID restrictions and people being unsure of safety and how things were going to roll out. We’re really happy with the number of kids we’ve go

The Prince George Minor Hockey Association has been able to put approximately 773 kids onto the ice.
