Road construction on Ospika

May 13, 2021 | 3:56 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – There are two seasons in the north, winter, and construction season. As you may have noticed, that has already started, with projects popping up around the city, including up on Ospika Boulevard.

Ospika will be reduced to one lane in both directions near the site from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm each day until about the end of the month allow for the installation of sanitary and water services as part of construction on a new building nearby. Travelers are advised to expect delays and to find alternate routes if possible.

“That’s the public operations building that’s being built by the regional district of Fraser- Fort Geroge,” said Michael Higgins, General Manager Of Community Service for the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George ” what it’s going to house is the emergency operations centre as well as our internet site for 9-1-1 communications and fire dispatch.”

All this is great, however, there is the issue of traffic delays, Higgins says, that should wrap up quickly.

” Oh certainly, right now all we’re doing is putting our underground services and fiber optic cables, that’s going into the facility, it’s just a brief interruption so that we can get that work done. ”

When asked when the road construction would be complete “That’s being handled between our contractor the city management planner ”

We did reach out to the city for comment on this project, but they declined our request.

As part of the project, the sidewalk on the east side of Ospika between 22nd Avenue and Opie will be closed. Pedestrians will be directed to cross Ospika at 22nd Avenue or Massey Drive and to use the sidewalk on the west side of Ospika. Access to the bus stops will be maintained.

Higgins says the construction portion should be completed by August of this year.
