Pandemic Review

BC Liberals slam the NDP over its Pandemic review

B.C. Liberals are calling on the provincial government to launch an independent review of all aspects of the pandemic response of the past two years.

Wednesday saw the launch of the public feedback form that will remain open until April 20. Mike Farnworth, the minister of public safety and solicitor general, appointed a review team to report back to the government on what it did well and what it could improve upon. The review team consists of two former deputy ministers, Bob Faye and Chris Trumpy. Dan Perrin a public policy professional rounds out the team of appointees.

The review will not cover public policy decisions made by the B.C.NDP to deal with consequences of the pandemic and decisions made by the provinces health officer. Economic recovery decisions will also not be part of the review but the process leading up to them will be.

The B.C. Liberals are calling for a review that takes a comprehensive look at the public health decisions and the government’s response to providing support to residents. An analysis of the election’s impact on pandemic management and supports for small businesses.

Liberals say there has been a complete lack of transparency around decisions made around long-term care facilities. A document released this morning said “When the B.C. Seniors Advocate tried to review the policy of ‘enhanced monitoring’ in LTC facility outbreaks the government refused to cooperate, saying they were “unable to participate due to urgent, pandemic-related responsibilities.”

“The NDP have announced a review that simply isn’t credible and falls far short of the request and the need for a full and independent review,” added Bond. “The NDP’s decision to severely limit the scope of the review is troubling but consistent with the government’s ongoing lack of transparency,” said BC Liberal Health Critic Shirley Bond.
