‘It’s been the thrill of my life’ – Premier Horgan stepping down

VANCOUVER — B.C. Premier John Horgan has announced he’s stepping down and has asked his party to hold a fall leadership convention.

He made the announcement in Vancouver this afternoon. He hinted that recent health challenges hastened the decision – Horgan recently beat cancer for the second time, including enduring 35 radiation treatments.

“My energy flags at times,” he told assembled media.

Horgan has been premier for five years and called holding the job “the thrill of my life.”

The timing of the announcement was questioned, considering his government has two-and-a-half years left in its mandate. He said following a recent interview last week in Victoria where he couldn’t answer whether he would run was a signal it was time to step down.”

“I came to the conclusion I could not seek re-election.”

Horgan will stay on as premier until a successor is chosen. Experts speculate that two early front-runners for Horgan’s job are Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing David Eby and Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon. Others considering a run are said to be Health Minister Adrian Dix, Finance Minister Selina Robinson, and Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside.
