City crews tasked with cleaning up abandoned encampments, garbage

PRINCE GEORGE – Spring cleaning is well underway for City of Prince George crews tasked once again with cleaning up abandoned encampments, and garbage strewn across greenbelts.

Illegal dumping appears to be part of the pile of garbage left for city crews to clean up at Moccasin Flats. Old dryers, microwaves, and truck tires all lie on the ground in Lower Patricia Blvd.

“It’s keeping up that’s the most important.” said Mayor Simon Yu.

The province has pledged action on encampments, including the Premier confirming he heard loud and clear the desire for Prince George to become a pilot community to a new ‘Homes for People’ strategy launched by the Eby administration.

Eby said he is aware of many challenges facing those in Prince George with more unique hurdles than other places in BC due to weather-related challenges.

Yu said those living in encampments should see more access to garbage bins soon as many hope for a future with less loose trash.

Currently, the city only has one garbage bin allocated to help service encampments with several more planned.

The Mayor also took the opportunity to encourage citizens about the upcoming spring cleanup taking place in the city on April 30th.
